Through a gunner's hatch along the coast of the South China Sea, we see this debarkation site with a LST in position to off-load its stores. Many of these ships were crewed by Korean crews and sailed under Japanese colors. |
Frank Emigh: "For some reason I can never remember the birthdays of my children, however I do remember taking those pictures. For some reason I remember that vividly. The LST is in Da Nang Harbor. I took that picture and the other pictures of Da Nang
at the same time. We took off from Marble [Mountain Air Facility], headed north toward China Beach, went by Liberty Bridge, out over Da Nang Harbor and on up the coast to around Red Beach where we picked up some troops and took them somewhere in the Arizona [terriory: area south of Da Nang]. I usually didn't take a camera when I flew. I
wasn't much into taking pictures, but I am glad that I have the few that I did take. I bought a $3.00 camera at the PX at NAS Memphis in 1966. When I arrived at Marble, it was around the end of April 1968. [HMH]463 was in that hanger at the north end of the mat near the hooches. I checked in and was
loaned out to Zulu Company for 30 days. The civilian contractors were building the new hanger at the south end, and while I was on the perimeter, the squadron moved into the new hanger. I think the VMO squadron moved into that hanger, later they moved and H&MS moved in there. I'm not real sure about that. I spent most of my time at Quang
Tri." |
