I Corps, RVN, 1968
Picking Up 105 Rounds at LZ Stud
From the side hatch of one bird, we see another HMH-463 bird hovering to pickup an external load of dime-nickle (105-MM) artillery rounds at LZ Stud.

Frank Emigh:
"Stud and Vandergrift are the same place.  They changed the name.  I was told that they change the name every once in a while as standard operating procedure in a combat zone.  I really don't know why they changed the name but I remember when they did it.  Seems like it was late 68 or early 69.  I have a good mental picture of northern I Corps.  Talking to other vets over the years I get the feeling that even though they did a lot of fighting, they usually had no idea where they were most of the time.  On the other hand, from up in that CH53 we could see everything and had a good mental picture of the war.  We picked up our loads at Stud.  The picture is looking south.  We took off that way, south, turned right and headed due west to Khe Sanh.  There was a road in the valley going west to Khe Sanh and when it was open you would see convoys of trucks moving slow with a tank leading.  I remember several firebases [artillery bases] on the ridges north of that valley which we re-supplied with 105 and 155 ammo. I don't remember the names. One picture I sent you had LZ Shepherd written on the back and I am just assuming that it is correct. From stud we went north through a mountain pass and the Razor Back was up there somewhere and also the Rock Pile: I think. I will have to look at a map.  My memory may not be as good as I thought.  And, Mudders Ridge was somewhere north of [LZ] Stud. There wasn't much in the way of firebases on up on the DMZ. I remember going up there to move troops around and resupply the recon outpost.  Most of them had a recoilless rifle that they used to fire spotter rounds."
